Metal Stamping: Intermediate comprehends various diverse practical and visual skills with knowledge of specialized materials and techniques. Stamping is the process of placing flat sheet metal in either blank or coil form into a stamping press where a tool and die surface forms the metal into a net shape. Stamping includes a variety of sheet-metal forming manufacturing processes, such as punching using a machine press or stamping press, blanking, embossing, bending, flanging, and coining. This book will introduce the knowledge and skills for those studying and/or working in metal stamping industry to interpret and convey information in response to workplace requirements.

About the Book

The information in this book covers basic to core competencies that a person must achieve to set up, conduct trial run and operate mechanical press; perform mechanical shearing operation which applies to a range of press operations including blanking, cutting-off, piercing/punching, trimming and bending; and perform mechanical press forming operation which applies to a range of press forming operations including piercing/punching, trimming, and forming/drawing.

About the Metal Stamping Industry

Metal Stamping is a process that use dies to transform flat metal sheets into shapes. Odds are you have a product in your home that has parts created through metal stamping because it is a process used in everything from your household appliances to automotive industries. This process is used for producing parts for large machinery, but the metal sheets can also be molded into shapes for household items like pots and pans. Mechanical and hydraulic are the two types of stamping presses. Metal stamping machines cast, punch, cut and shape metal sheets. To create three-dimensional shapes, a flat sheet of metal is inserted into a die and then a mechanical press is activated to create the object. Sheets of up to 1/4 inch thickness are molded into specified shapes and sizes. Aluminum, copper, zinc and stainless steel are some of the metals used by companies offering metal stampings. The presses used for metal stampings can create quite a wide range of products and they can perform a series of operations including blanking, metal coining and four slide forming. Blanking (also called fine blanking) is usually the first die in a series of dies that leads to one completed part. Metal coining (as the title implies) can be used to create coins, but it has other uses as well. Four slide forming incorporates a variety of stamping and forming processes to create more complex products and it is particularly effective for smaller parts. Over the past few years, metal stamping has been replacing other metal forming processes (such as forging and die casting) because of the low production costs. The products can also be stronger and more durable than those made in other metal forming processes. Metal stampings are used in a variety of industries because parts can be turned out at a very high rate and this is good for overall production times and costs. Whether it is as an entry level Press Operator, an experienced CNC Machinist, or a Manufacturing Engineer, employees at Danville Metal Stamping are valued for their contributions. There are a wide variety of opportunities in metal stamping.
